European Travel Scams Reviewed With Tradewinds Vacations

Posted on 10.16.12

As Europe continues to be one of the most visited destinations in the world today, travelers will continue to have issues relating to travel scams and scam artists. In a less than perfect world, top cities such as London and Paris in Europe and New York will continue to have issues with those out to take advantage of the millions of less than prepared tourists walking around the city. While scams can range from just annoying to downright dangerous, there are simply some that you should expect to see at some point. Whether an old school scam or a more recent adaptation, there are just some things that all travelers should watch out for especially in the larger cities in the U.S. and Europe.

Though scams may change, the ones tried and true scams will always be around. These scams that you should watch for include:

Slow Count – From stores to banks, the slow count is a distraction technique used by many thieves. Understanding that you are already less familiar with foreign currencies, some will “slow count” you right out of a fair amount of your money. Pay attention, be familiar with the currency and you can avoid becoming a victim of the slow count.

Distraction techniques – Though some pickpockets are just good at their trade, others rely on distraction techniques. These will usually occur in crowds in bigger cities. Be sure to pay attention. Don’t be distracted and try to blend in when you travel to avoid standing out from the crowd and becoming a target.

Fake Police – If anyone claiming to be an officer accuses you of a crime and says that problems can be resolved right there by paying a fee, don’t listen. Always ask to see a badge and never go with anyone claiming to be an officer who does not have proof of who they are.

Dishonest Cab Drivers – From driving out of the way to over-charging, using the slow count or just charging more based on your appearance, dishonest cab drivers can be found in any city. The only way to assure that you will not fall victim to these scams is by not taking a cab however, if this is not possible, be sure that any cab you do take is one which is licensed and properly licensed.

Most scams today in Europe and around the globe will involve some sort of distraction. As with all times in your life, pay attention to your surroundings and keep your guard up when you travel. Avoid being sidetracked when you travel and you can avoid becoming a victim of scams when you travel.
